Sinhala/Tamil New year is celebrated in the country with the beleif that sun travels in a circle, known as the zodiac. The zodiac is divided into tweleve segments known as the raashi. Each of the segments is identified by a zodiac sign. During New Year it is beleived that the sun that has been moving along the zodiac circle visiting each raashi is by April in the last Rashi (Pisces) and ready to move onto the first raashi (Aries) marking the dawn of another New Year.
Sri Lanka, being an agricultural country, month of April is also the season of harvesting. Therefore it is celebrated as a harvesting festival. where the new crop as arrived in every home.
Anually, OSC has recognized the need to celebrate this important cultural event of the Host culture. New Year celebrations 2010 took place on the 07th of April by the Primary Students of the OSC.
